Behind Bars in Africa

Prisoners in poor African countries get one meal a day, which they split into two meals due to the lack of food supply. They cannot brush teeth or take a shower as daily necessities and water are not often provided. Sick prisoners are neglected due to weak health care systems. The shortage of civil lawyers often delays trials. This results in hundreds of prisoners sleeping in one cell, making it impossible for them to lie down; as a result, they sleep sitting up or huddled tightly. These represent only a part of the world we happen to see from news on social media. In another world behind bars are those who sacrifice themselves and their affluent lives to go to troubled areas in Africa and help make the lives of prisoners better. The lives of these volunteers are nothing more than intense as they struggle to improve living conditions. Unfortunately, there are also those who prey on these innocent volunteers. The world is beautiful yet cruel at the same time.

아프리카 빈곤한 나라들의 교도소에 수용된 죄수들은 식량 공급 부족으로 하루 한끼 식량만을 지급 받아 두끼로 나눠 먹습니다. 생필품과 물을 자주 공급 받지 못해 양치질과 샤워는 거의 하기 어렵고, 빈약한 의료체계로 죄수들의 온갖 질병들이 그대로 방치되곤 합니다. 사법 인력 부족으로 재판이 지연되어 교도소의 죄수는 넘쳐나고 수용 할 곳은 부족, 한 감방 안에 수백명이 밤에 눕지 못하여 앉거나 겹쳐 자야 하는 곳도 있습니다. 여기까지는 우리가 미디어를 통해 접해 본 세상 일부분 이기도 합니다.  철창 뒤의 또 다른 세상이란 죄수들의 그러한 삶을 조금이라도 개선하기 위해 풍족한 자기의 삶을 버리고 아프리카 험지로 가서 희생하며 봉사하는 사람들의 세상입니다. 봉사자들 삶은 그 상황을 개선하기 위해 정말 고됩니다. 그런데 봉사자들을 뒤에서 등쳐먹고 있는 놈들도 있다는 것입니다.  세상은 아름답지만 잔혹하기도 합니다.
