The world population is 7.97 Billion as of 2022. Half the world’s population (3.9B) lives in cities and towns.

Many people move to cities from their rural hometowns to have access to better jobs and education opportunities for their children. Urbanization is the process through which cities grow, and higher and higher percentages of the population comes to live in the city. In particular, developing countries are seeing rapid growth in urbanization, causing issues such as high population density, inadequate infrastructure, lack of affordable housing and water, flooding, pollution, crime, slum creation, and traffic congestion.

  • Basic Infrastructure Services are Essential for Urbanization – But Who Will Pay? Urbanization cannot happen in a vacuum. Cities need to provide basic infrastructure services—clean water, sewage, roads, electricity, telecommunications, to name a few—to support the basic livelihood of their citizens and businesses.
